I’m Sam Stone—a bricklayer aiming to restore and preserve the work of the master craftsmen that came before us and built our historic structures. After nearly a decade of working in both modern and historic masonry, I started Sam Stone Masonry to begin to serve this purpose as a preservationist not only of the structures I have the pleasure to work on, but also of the craftsmanship that masonry used to be synonymous with. Rather than building or repairing just to cut a profit, I ply my trade with not only the client in mind, but also the next generations of tradesmen and homeowners. Masonry—both the product and the trade—that outlives the mason.

“Masonry that outlives the mason” is more than bricks & mortar…it’s an entirely different approach to bricklaying.

Rather than approaching construction & repair from a purely utilitarian standpoint, my approach is a holistic one, taking into account not only the structural requirements of the project, but also the aesthetic, historic, and even spiritual aspects of a building. Where other bricklayers and masonry contractors are out to cash a check from a homeowner, my goal is to better the overall health of the home itself. This means no unsightly, poorly-finished repair that sticks out for decades, but rather a beautiful, seamless end product that not only outlasts the competition, but works with the original construction of your home rather than against it.

Masonry that outlives the mason means preserving the historic buildings around us—and the craftsmanship of those that built them.

Mortar

Our mortar mixes are unique to each job, from lime-based mortar mixes for historic applications to the most advanced polymer-added masonry mixes for enhanced bonding in applications where traditional mortars aren’t up to the task.

Building Units

We match building units as closely as possible, including not only appearance but also composition and age, often utilizing salvaged bricks from the same time period to maintain historic integrity.

No Harsh Chemicals

Clean work means less aggressive cleaning solutions. We use exclusively Vanatrol color-safe masonry cleaner diluted 5:1, meaning your historic structure isn’t exposed to harmful muriatic acid or pressure washers.

End-to-end Transparency

Unlike other masonry contractors, we feel that an educated homeowner is key to the effective preservation of our historic infrastructure. This is why we are more than willing to go into extreme detail to explain every step of the project.
